Fuel Tax Credit Calculator

Version 09.2

Takes 2 to 10 minutes to complete

Why use this calculator?

This tool will help you to calculate your fuel tax credit entitlement for a business activity statement (BAS).

Note: Before using this calculator, you should read the 'Keeping records and calculating eligible litres' fact sheet

Calculating fuel tax credits for the business activity statement

Where you are claiming for fuel acquired, manufactured or imported during the tax period you will need to:
  • be registered for fuel tax credits and goods and service tax (GST) with the Tax Office
  • have kept the appropriate records to support your claim
  • know the total litres for each fuel type you acquired, manufactured or imported during the reporting period
  • know the calculation method that you will be using to determine your entitlement
    1. if you are using the basic calculation method, for each fuel type and eligible business fuel use, know the amount of eligible litres
    2. if you are using the percentage use calculation method, for each fuel type and eligible business fuel use, know the eligible percentage of total fuel purchased that you wish to claim.

  • If you have any adjustments or corrections to previous business activity statements that can be attributed to the current tax period, you need to calculate the number of litres that increase or decrease your claim. Please refer to the 'Fuel Tax Credit – Making adjustments and correcting mistakes' guide
  • If you have an EGCS entitlement for diesel fuel purchased prior to 1 July 2006, you can claim this amount as a fuel tax credit adjustment on your business activity statement (BAS), providing it is attributed to a tax period that ends before 1July 2009. You need to know the number of litres for each eligible EGCS fuel use (i.e. diesel used in on road activities and / or diesel used in all other eligible activities).
Note: Do not include claims for EGCS entitlements for other fuels that may attract a different rate.

Other manual calculations

Occasionally you will have adjustments and corrections of mistakes that cannot be included on the calculator because they can not be expressed in litres. You may also have EGCS entitlements that cannot be processed by this calculator. Where this is the case you will need to make manual calculations in order to determine the correct amount to include on your business activity statement at labels 7D and 7C.

How do I use the calculator in determining my fuel tax credit for my business activity statement?

  • Input the business activity statement (BAS) start date in the following format (dd/mm/yyyy)
  • Select your business activity statement cycle (Monthly, Quarterly, Annual)
  • Enter the total litres acquired, manufactured or imported of each fuel type and select the calculation method you wish to use - basic calculation or percentage use
  • Enter your eligible fuel use details
  • Indicate whether you have any adjustments or corrections and/or EGCS entitlement to be included on this business activity statement
  • Enter any adjustments or corrections and/or EGCS entitlements.
  • Calculate your entitlement. The system will display the details entered and results in a summary report
  • Print the summary report for your records.
  • You may also export the results to an EXCEL file or XML file.

What do I do after I have calculated my fuel tax credits for my business activity statement?

  • Make any manual changes to labels 7C and 7D on the summary report resulting from other manual calculations (if applicable)
  • Record your totals at labels 7C and 7D on your business activity statement
  • Send your completed business activity statement to the tax office using your normal channel. DO NOT SEND THE SUMMARY REPORT WITH YOUR BUSINESS ACTIVITY STATEMENT.
